I get 4.5mb 3g speed here in Finland.

The codecfamily used for GSM voice is AMR. Look it up on Wikipedia.
It comes in 2 major families, AMR and AMR-NB (the narrow band version). Both have even multiple variations in bandwidth used.

The codecs are heavily licensed, although there exist free versions as well. There are vendors in UK trialling HD voice over GSM these days, allowing the higher bitrate AMR codecs to be used. Of course, the mobile phone needs to be able to use the higher bitrate codec variants.

Sidenote, the usage of the AMR/AMR-NB codecs is also the reason SIP provider Truphone manages to have a very clear voice and stable connection all the time, even on 2.5G, while 'standard' SIP providers (like all betamax clones) struggle big time due to their inefficient (but free) codec usage.

I wished Truphone came out with a proper (own) but fully integrated SIP client, I'll happily pay extra per minute for better connection quality and the metadata CallerID & sending SMS party handling.

I use 2g normally to save battery, when I need to access internet then i switch to 3g.

And When you are using 3g, you can receive call and surf the web at the same time.

When you are usng 2g, you can only do either one. Receive call or surd the web.

Ping times might be similar, download speeds are certainly faster on 3G

3G typically gives worse reception which may be a reason for the apparent higher power consumption; the phone has to ramp up the transmit power to be able to contact the cell tower

If in a strong 3G area, you are more likely to keep "full bars". If on Edge, just moving your head will cause signal strength drop. Phone calls go over both 3G/2G. If forced to use 2G, time sensitive data, such as SIP clients and Skype calls, will experience QoS issues. This has proven true on both T-Mobile USA, as well as AT&T, with multiple phones.

If in a marginal 3G area, to say that 3G reception will be erractic, goes without saying, but to say that 3G reception is problematic all the time, is not the rule.

The one problem I have with T-Mobile, is wall penetration with some buildings, due to the frequency used. It was never an issue with my Motorola Q on AT&T, throughout the northeastern US. I had similar reception issues on Verizon's CDMA network, as I do with AT&T/T-Mobile's 2G/Edge networks...nature of the technology. And keep in mind, not all phones are created equal.
