Hi,

I got the N800 to use with GPS and my bicycle, so I'd like to tell Maemo Mapper to avoid highways. I notice that http://gnuite.com:8080/cgi-bin/gpx.cgi has an "avoid highways" checkbox. How can I tell the Mapper to avoid them?

Thanks!
Les

I believe this option will be put into the next minor version update to maemo mapper. In the meantime, just generate maps off of gnuite.com, do a save as, and open the routes in mameo-mapper.

I modified the URL for the download maps dialog, so that tacked on to the end, there is an &avoid_highways=on

It's not really working, though and I can't figure out why, because when I use the same URL from a web browser, the XML looks right to me.

I'm not sure what you mean? I would open http://gnuite.com:8080/cgi-bin/gpx.cgi in a web browser, generate your directions, save the generated info to a file, then open that file up in maemo mapper.

Ok, part of my problem was a misunderstand (on my part) on the differences between a national road and a highway. The confusion of being an American in Europe! Highways, for Google (and probably everybody else) are the huge, international routes which have no space for bikes at all. National roads are large roads that are merely alarming to bike on, unless there also a parallel bike path.

Ok, so you can tell your maeomo mapper to avoid highways. Navigate throught the menus: Route->Download. Then a dialog box comes up concerning the route that you want to download. Near the top of this dialog box, there's a text field for a URL. That URL is pre-filled out to contact gnuite.com. It's a long URL with CGI stuff at the end of it. If you go over to the very end, you can append some text, which will cause the downloaded route to avoid highways.

The thing to add at the end is:

&avoid_highways=on

This passes along the message exactly the same as if you had checked the box on the web form and you were doing the save-as method that you've been using.

If you change your mind for some reason and want to use highways, remove the text you added to the url and go back to how it was originally.

Got it, thats a good trick. I also found that building custom routes in Maemo Mapper works well using these steps:

1) Click and hold on the screen until a menu pops up, select "Location", select "Add Route Point"
2) Now click and hold on the screen at a different location of the route you want to travel and select "Location" and "Download Route to..."
3) At the pop-up screen select the radial button "Use End of Route" and click "OK"
4) Continue step 2 until your custom route is built.

I did the above to build alternate routes to work since the main route is routinely a highway parking lot, but as a biker myself I've done something similar with bike routes I want to ride.
