    Just an FYI

The way I had to set it up was as follows
go to email.nokia.com and create a new acct. (do this by entering your email acct "yourname@gmail.com" and enter the password for that email acct.)
Once you do that you proceed to your n900 device and click on the email Aplication
click on mail(in the title bar) and select new acct
    choose next
and where it says region, choose your region (mine was USA)
under service provider select Nokia Messaging from the drop down box
    then choose next
Enter your email address and password, (the one you used @ email.nokia.com to create an acct)
    then choose next

I believe after that evrything will sync(there are some settings you can change about syncing preferences)
to add other email accts, go back to email.nokia.com and log in (if your not already) and choose add another under "My Email Address" and follow prompts

The problem is that when you register on email.nokia.com, certain country codes abort the registration, so for us Norwegians for example, you need to use a fake number in order to get the account registered at all..

I have tried to sign up with several random phone numbers and country codes and am still unable to get to any page that let's me choose a new account name for the nokia messaging. I always get to the same screen that says to go to my n900 and select email...new etc. Can someone that has actually gotten this to work post a fake number that they used?

Maybe if you hinted what country you were in, someone might tell you what sort of thing worked for them.

why doesnt gmail work for you guys?

I just set it up as normal using the built in email client and everything worked fine. Ofcourse I had to specify the IMAP and SMTP server ports as gmail requires. Everything works great, updates every 5 minutes.

Gmail using imap or pop3 does work just fine.

The great thing about using nokia messaging is that it PUSHES the emails to your phone. So, if you're using your email for texts with google voice, like I do, you don't have super delayed conversations over text. The emails come through within 20 seconds, rather than waiting 5+ minutes.
