Easy way to check quality of front camera (aka webcam):
install package gstreamer-tools

Execute commandline:
gst-launch v4l2src device=/dev/video1 ! autovideosink

(Mirror application additionally flips image and adds cropping/zooming options and so on.)

Next open shutter of real camera, close camera application and then execute:
gst-launch v4l2src ! autovideosink

There are no any color corrections, so it doesn't look same than with camera application, but compare it to front cam.

Additionally front camera has very low resolution, I have black vertical line on video about 100px from left border. Do you have it?

(btw: you can't use both cameras same time)

[edit]
There are one-liner to take image:
gst-launch v4l2camsrc device=/dev/video1 num-buffers=1 ! omx_jpegenc ! filesink location=test.jpg

In this image there are that black vertical line. And it is not only line, all in left side of it are darker.

It's a firmware issue, see https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5663#c2

I have that very same band problem, but on the right side. I hope it is a firmware issue and not a hardware one.

I take it you are using 'Mirror' ? In mirror, the sides are flipped (the whole point of it being a mirror )

I am actually surprised at how much noise the regular camera has - it may be that I need to play with the settings more. Wasn't expecting anything amazing but was expecting quite good given the test photos people had taken and posted.

So bad quality of front camera depends on firmware/mirror application or hardware?

As the banner on mirror's startup states, it's firmware + hardware. I would also like to ask people not to downvote mirror based on image quality as it has no influence over it. Thank you.

Internal comment: "This cannot be fixed in the software due to hardware
limitations."

I'm really disappointed with the front cam, the quality of the first mobiles with a cam was way better. Its not usable at all in rooms :/ They should have used the space for a HDMI port instead.
