Better optimizations eh. Sounds nice in theory. But in the real world, software is never 100% perfectly optimized. Flash may be slow coz it's not hardware gpu accelarated but if the cpu was faster, we might not care as much and we wouldnt have to wait and wait and hope we'll get Flash 10.1 someday. Maybe a 33% overclock to 800MHz will make it more feasible even for some slow flash sites right now instead of hoping for sw optimization.

Dunno. Overclocking might be scary to many who never tried it before. But for those who have, it's nothing new and not that scary. Like speeding with your car, you just need to know the risk involved.

Anyways. I would love to try overclocking my N900.

I must admit if I owned a Pre, the many warnings about overheating would give me second thoughts about overclocking. For example (from the installation procedure before you even start running anything else):

Allow OS to run for at least 4 hours but make sure Pre is not hot (>45C) before proceeding with Procedure 2

Im courious how both over- and underclocking would influence the battery life - like automatic scaling from 200Mhz to 800Mhz instead of 250-600.

Doesnt exist some studies on this topic? I mean - if one can guess it would increase battery life 10% up, or 20% up, or even 15% down ... something like that ...

only on android would someone take the time i wish there was a full android flash n900 running android permanently or more preferred a dual boot Cause i like the n900 but it has lots of nokia will never unlock cause to lazy potential! that why i try to look forward to meago cause intels in on it and there not AS lazy like nokia

Im new to the "world of overclocking", I really never saw a reason to risk my precious PC CPU ... so forgive my ignorance ...


I understand its different for a desktop CPU and a tablet CPU - but how hard is to say processor that its supposed to scale up to 800mHz?

It's actually not hugely different in a technical sense.
Just that N900 is a handheld device.
So they have to consider "heat" a bit more.

N900's cpu may be able to handle 800mhz just fine. Maybe it's not even really "overclocking" technically.
(Most chips have a much higher tolerance limit than what it's clocked at in a retail device to ensure it's stable just incase)

But inside the N900, it may pose some issues at such frequency.
No active fan, non-existent heat sink and plastic enclosure = very hot inside.
CPU causes more errors when too hot = unstable cpu = crashes/freezes.

But most chips these days also have thermal protection etc built-in.
So if it reaches a certain temperature, it'll clock itself down etc to lower it.

Also, we are not talking about a constant lock of the N900 CPU at 800MHz.
It might run at 800MHz only a few times per second or per every few seconds.
In most normal use, it doesn't max out the CPU constantly for a long time.
(but it does if you extract a large file within the phone such as easy-deb image)

Anyways, it's not as dangerous as people think. But it can be in the wrong hands. =P
