Do you have your old phone? If so can you compare indicated signal strengths?
There could be a problem with the wireless circuitry that is causing your battery issues.

I sit an n900 down directly next to a iPhone. The n900 reports one level below full signal, the iPhone displays signal at the lowest level possible. If all is correct with an n900 (at least on some networks) the reception is exemplary.
