I'm wondering if it's possible to view applications in repositories on my PC.

Is it also possible to view them like on the N900 in categories?

I don't want to see the index of the repositories as if you just browse through it on your browser

What I do is disable all the Catalogs in App Mgr except for the one I'm curious about. Then everything I look at is from that repository.

I don't think you can do over-the-web browsing with categories right now, but that's a great suggestion. repository.maemo.org would have to install a category-based interface, but the category metadata is in the .debs, right? I know that for yum repositories you can install something called repoview; is there something like that for apt repositories? I see that Debian has a category-based interface, e.g., http://packages.debian.org/stable/ . Ubuntu probably does also.

Thinking ahead to MeeGo, if that's RPM-based, will the repositories have yum metadata? Then that can support repoview... I'm not asking if yum will be the download tool, just if there will be metadata.
