So, feel free to file a ticket in maemo.org Brainstorm if it does not exist yet and describe the problem. I think if it's described as "make it harder for friends to do things I don't want" it can make sense, though I still wonder how to tell an average user "This does NOT encrypt your data or something. Your conversations can still be easily accessed with a little bit of technical knowledge."

i have a palm tx. my n900 is here to replace that old device. a lot of people are buying smartphones to replace their pda.

in that world, several layers of security is something common.

i feel some "naked" with my n900 now.

The problem with something like this is that if you start implementing it where do you stop? Conversations, email, browser, call log, contacts, calendar and photos all contain private data, and that's just the built-in apps.

BTW, there's already a brainstorm idea for the problem.

it just crossed my mind: one can write simple application that shows password dialog. then modify all icons you need to have password protected and voila. doesn't help if someone knows how to start conversations etc from a command line....

e: I mean the application listens what application must be executed(conversations) and prompts for a password. if password is correct, it executes conversations or whatever.

ee: added this to brainstorm

This use case (casual handing of a device to another person, not military-grade security) was the thing I was trying to brainstorm in that link. By the way, here's the same link but not requiring a logon to view: http://maemo.org/community/brainstor...oaning_device/

On the other hand, for all that people who don't hand down their phone to their friends, having to enter a password every time to some simple task would be extremely irritating.

If this is implemented, it should be properly configurable.
