I was able to install 0.4.1 a minutes ago(otherwise it wasn't showing through app manager). Still same negative result, and I don't have any GUI in status menu.
Notifikation of Email, sms and calls works fine. But there is no notifikation of IMs (skype).
Further there is just a notification of the last event. E.g. if I recieve an sms it shows it by blinking in the statusbar. When I then have missed call, sms notification is replaced by the one for missed calls (same with email). So I just see the last missed event.

There's no notification for email right now... and I don't know about IM notification (and email) - maybe in the future...
Regarding the notification for only one event - this is a bug and will be solved on the next release.

Currently I'm identifying the "SMS has been read" event by the closing of the notification window or the Conversations window. I'll try to do it by identifying the "opening" event....
This would be a great enhancement for the app

I had the same problem. After installing the newest version taday an rebooting TWICE it suddently appeared
tried both xterm instructions and a restart .... still no option menu in status area???
Then it must be corrupted installation or unmet dependency.
Try remove and reinstall, if this does not solve the issue, wait for next release, I'll try to catch the missing dependency then.
aha, i had 0.3.1 installed (installed for the first time this morning) uninstalled 0.3.1, reinstalled 0.4.1, restarted n900 and its there in the status area.
