If you want to compile software, use scratchbox on your desktop PC. The easiest way is to find the INdT Maemo SDK VMWare Appliance (google it) and run that in VMWare Player. Then you will have a full development environment and can compile on your PC - much faster than the device, and you don't need to muddy the device with all the developer packages.
I've located a deb from the debian site with the unofficial port for MAKE, but I consistently get a libc6 >= 2.35 dependency error, even though it is installed. I've tried it through xterm as well as my ssh connection as root, so can anyone shoot me in the right direction on how to get it on there?
