Funny - for me the open source is a huge reason, because the device is an actual multifunctional computer. But I understand that people have different motivations and reasons. Luckily there are good devices for both of us

how long since the 3G got launched? the usual at&t contract length is 2 years, right?

I think my iPod touch is running at 532 MHz. Both my n810 and my n800 multi-task just fine at 400 MHz with a very, very similar CPU and a much heavier OS, and Apple doesn't consider the iPod touch 2G psuedo multi-tasking worthy? They are truly software pussies.

I've concluded that the thing about Apple is that if they can't implement it in a fashion where the functionality will not harm the perception of Apple products then they will choose to omit it until they can either get it working or until people forget about it (with the help of marketing).

For example, cut/copy and paste, multi-tasking, etc..It's likely that they don't want the perception of Apple products to be poor at say multi-tasking so instead of letting users try it out themselves and learn that it's a bad idea to run X many heavy apps at once they rather just not let them do it at all.

Part of that is why I can never own an Apple product. If I did I would constantly be fighting against their walls (e.g. jailbreaking) which as we can see Apple is more than willing to play the cat and mouse game with jailbreakers.

i saw a tweet saying the N900 could have a premature death because of this "so called" multi-tasking on the iPhone.

    I laughed!

Of course he thinks it is good. Because now iphone users can be flooded with pop up ads from the ad company that Apple bought.
In fact Jobs says he thinks he can be serving up to 1 billion ads per day.

IAds coming to a Iphone near you.
Apple having complete control over your device and content even better.

Let's not forget the difference in price points and value for money.

    Here in Canada,
    The N900 sells for $570.
    The 3G sells for $600.
The iPhone 3GS in currently priced at $700/$800 for the 16/32GB version.

At that pricing, the two 3GS models are 23% and 40% more expensive than the N900, respectively.

Once iPhone 4.0 hits, it will likely replace the 3GS in pricing, which will take the place of 3G. By that time, the N900 will be even cheaper.

For reference, today 1 USD = 1.00139 CAD
