My good friend James of JKOnTheRun has Verizon Blackberry 8830 and was having problems getting it to work as a DUN modem. He Skyped me and we walked through some settings. We found the root problem:

In Control Panel -> Phone -> Edit

We see the device but no supported profiles and no Cellular Type.

The funny thing is that Dial-Up Networking IS advertised to his Mac but not to his N800.

We then went to the connection manager and connected, and the funny thing is we SAW an IP, but the Blackberry's "modem mode enabled" status bar went away. The N800 remained connected, but the modem mode was gone. When he connects his Mac, the "modem mode enabled" status stays on and he can get online just fine.

The funny thing is that the N800's connection manager SHOWS AN IP ADDRESS, and DNS and Gateway information, but no data is passed. Always - bytes received, 360 bytes sent.

Does anyone have a Blackberry with similar problems?

I had a similar problem with my BB 8800. I spent several hours on the phone with both my carrier and BB, and the solution that we came up with was an exchange for an E61. We couldn't figure it out at all.

With Verizon you might have to pay to have the DUN profiles enabled. This was an issue with a friend's HTC on Verizon.

As an aside, it strikes me that BB disables their bluetooth DUN profiles on all their phones. You can use them for physically tethered (via USB) DUN, but not over bluetooth.

My brother just emailed this link to me when I asked him about this. It seems that others have similar problems.

Good luck!

Ok I joined the forum finally just because I'm hoping someone got this to work. I've never been able to get the 800 to work with Verizon. I pay for the tether option on my Blackberry and it works great from OSX and Linux...I jumped through hoops to get it to work through MS's SERIOUSLY BROKEN Vista OS, but it just plain don't work off of my N800...So consider this a bump of love ...Does anyone have any happy endings yet?

I was trying to get my N800 tethered to a blackberry 7250 but no luck. seems to pair just fine over bluetooth but DUN doesn;t show up as a feature. as a result, it can;t seem to connect.

it works fine with my hacked LG8300 though.
