Hi all!

I had a question for a long time, followed the posts here but I didn't seem to find an answer.

When we set N900 to retrieve email or update a widget every 4 hours, if we're not connected, the device won't connect itself. It must already be connected to the internet in order to retrieve email or update a widget every 4 hours.

Do you all keep your internet connection always on? I only use 2G (EDGE), does it take much more battery to leave it connected?
Anyway, the widget tries to update even if internet is not connected so that takes battery?

Please help

Thank you

I keep edge connected whenever not on wifi. Eats slightly more power than my wifi. Lasts the day on either.

I find that staying connected or pinging for widget data seems to make my battery drain faster. I don't know your settings but when my n900 can't connect to wifi it sometimes gets hung up and starts draining the battery...wlancond bug I believe.

I decided to go for battery life and switched every thing to manual. takes a bit getting used to but it works for me.

There is an application here with a dedicated thread that should help you. It turns off your connection when you aren't using it but lets it turn back on when you've scheduled something.

Unfortunately, I don't remember its name, but if you scan the headers in Applications you should find it -- its name should make it obvious.

Edit: Check this thread, in the Applications folder:

[Announce] AutoDisconnect - Automatically disconnect idle connections

I too have this problem...

Autodisconnect works well in disconnecting. But the email app wont connect itself back to the internet for me.

That was one thing my WinMo device did very well.
