Hello!

I am new to the N800, it's a nice toy but has a slightly awkward UI as some of you well know *grin*

I've flashed to the latest 2007 release and am running it off an MMC card.

After using my device for a few days I have a couple of questions.

First of all, I'd like to be able to have shortcuts to common applications directly on the home screen - is this possible? All that's there at the moment is a google search field, kind of a waste

Secondly, what's the easiest way of lauching a shell script from the GUI? I've created a script that mounts a CIFS share but I don't want to drop to an xterm to run it every time. File manager doesn't have any file association for .sh files...

I've tried to make a menu entry for it, my creating a desktop file, but I think I need to create a .service file for it too? Seems like overkill. If there's not an easy way to do it, fair enough.

Look forward to your ideas!

Regarding your first question:

Simple Launcher should do the trick

Cheers

I tried that app, but could figure out how to configure it. No instructions, no control panel, no clue at all. Why do people write apps and then don't tell you how to use it?

I prefer IDEA much better. The config, albeit awkward and sometimes counter intuitive, at least has is a control panel for you to use.

After you installed the applet, you need to open home application menu, click on 'Select applets…', click on checkbox next to 'Simple Launcher', and press 'OK'. You will be put into 'Edit Layout' mode where you can select the location and the size of the applet. After you are happy with with the settings, click on green checkbox button at the top right corner. Now you can configure the applet: open the menu, select 'Applet settings', and choose 'Launcher settings…'. In the dialog you should now see, you can select the applications you want to use as well as order them according to your preferences. When you are done, press 'OK'.
