Thanks for your update, Aniello. It's good to clear up misunderstandings.

One thing I don't understand is this: how is it possible that Rogers is the only carrier in the world that transmits the phonebook name of the calling party along with the number?

Is this really such an obscure, Canadian-only premium feature?

Next you'll tell me that Canada is the only place where all landlines do this (and all home phones support it)?

My understanding thus far was that this feature worked for everyone, but was broken for Rogers for some reason (maybe slightly out-of-spec way of doing it?). I figured it would be a lot easier to make the change to the open-source platform than to get Rogers to change its spec.

In any case, I don't imagine that all those phones that Rogers carries had to have custom firmware written in by the phone manufacturer. Even the poster child for one-size-fits-all, the iPhone - which has one firmware edition, afaik - supports text caller ID.

(My apologies for bringing Apple products into this. I don't intend for this to devolve into an iPhone vs. the world debate)

How do you sniff dbus? I'd like to see if my output is different from yours.

May be they implemented it and have people pay for it.
What is sent is the name as the network as it stored in their system, not the name as it is stored in the user's phone address book.
The caller can disable this, I think.

I have never seen it in Europe. I only have seen it done for SMSes, but is a different feature with similar outcome.

See post earlier about CNAP/ WCNAM.

No idea about that.

I don't know, I just stumbled upon this option when registered with Rogers and found out (surprised!!) you've got to pay a whopping $8 (PER MONTHT!) to even get the Caller ID!!!
Something that it's always been free in several European countries and I would never thought I would have to pay for it.
Of course I am not paying for it.
It's a steal!

Not sure... I googled around and many phones do have the same issue with Rogers caller's name option.
I just tried to sum 2+2.

Could AT&T customers post back with their experience?

From the AT&T site:
Your phone should come with Caller ID already activated. There are no special instructions to use Caller ID—when someone calls, the name and number will automatically appear on your phone's display.

Christ. What don't you seem to understand? It works for regular caller id. CNAP/WCNAM are different beasts and I don't even think AT&T uses it.

Getting input from more users is not going to help. No consumer has this functional on an N900. DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?

No need to get testy

I was just hoping to find out whether Canada is actually the only country that has this concept, and whether or not there are other users affected by this.

This problem is NOT Rogers or Fido specific. Every Nokia I have owned since my 6133 have supported this feature. Actually even my 8390 and 3300 supported it but rogers didn't offer it when I was using those phones. My N95 worked with this feature and even my 7900 PRISM which was never offered for sale in Canada and my N97 which I bought directly from Nokia USA support the feature. It is actually a very old standard that for some reason only recently has started to disappear from cell phones. The iPhone cannot do it, Android phones cannot do it (even ones from Rogers and Fido) Many other manufacturers phones support the feature and it is very disappointing that high end phones such as the N900, iPhone and all Android devices lack this basic funcionality. Why? Mostly because GSM/UMTS/WCDMA carriers have chosen not to adapt to the STANDARD. Rogers also offers home phone service (via cable) so they already have access to the PSTN database to transmit and receive the names with the caller ID. My cell phone on Rogers transmits my name to regular landlines and other Rogers subscribers another feature that most other cellular providers cannot do as far as I know.

EDIT: the iPhone 3.1 and newer DOES support the feature now

If anyone else has calling name ID offered to them it would be great to people know about it. I have a hard time believing that only ONE cellular provider in the world actually transmits the names with the Caller ID.
