This is an interesting article on Theora decoding on the DSP of the N900:

http://blog.mjg.im/2010/04/16/theora-on-n900.html

it is also covered on Slashdot:

http://news.slashdot.org/story/10/04...Firefox-Mobile

The N900 is the first phone with DSP accelerated Theora playback

That DSP opimized Theora decoder should be ported to gstreamer also, so native media player could play Theora video efficiently also.

Can anyone explain to the non-technical among us why this is a good thing?

efficient optimized playback saves battery, lets you do more while the video is playing, support patent-free formats, competition, level playing field and other buzzwords will follow ;-)

Doing video decoding on the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) is a good thing since:
  • It frees up the CPU to do other things (e.g. only 20% CPU is used for full screen video playback).
  • For signal processing related instructions, the DSP is more power efficient than the CPU. Therefore decoding video on the DSP should increase battery life.

Apart from that, that it is possible for anyone (who has the expertise) to develop code for the DSP of the N900 is cool.. and no other phone has DSP accelerated Theora decoding.

Was there any software for N900 coming out of this?
I did not find anything here or on internet.

http://wss.co.uk/pinknoise/theorarm/ seems to be work in progress.

Thanks in advance

So is this DSP Theora decoder working with gstreamer?
Or how can I use this decoder?
