this might help. It is an online manual for turrican II:

    http://www.lemonamiga.com/games/docs.php?id=1694

    More importantly this quote:

"General information: The game is played with joystick and keys. Owners of an Amiga may use a joystick with two independent fire buttons. This is explained below."

    Yeeeeees...twooooo buttooooonnnsss...

Anyway, same happens with floppy drives: Amiga support two, but many software need all disk inserted in DF0, they weren't coded to read DF1 if you have it installed.
I agree some apps read joy buttons always as fire0, but internally there is fire1.

Remember, Amiga was for CODERS, not PROGRAMMERS. Methodology wasn't very appreciated... we needed every cpu slot for copper lists and bobs handling... forgetting to do it "academically"!!

Can I ask what "copper lists" and "bobs handling" are? is copper the co-processor?

The hardware sprites of the Amiga were very very weak... but the blitter hardware makes the work, moving "very big amounts of graphical data" fast and without (not 100% true) motorola 68000
So mostly all sprites in Amiga are not REAL sprites, are half-half ("bobs"="blitter objects")
They were rude to mask and background restore (automated in real hardware in sprites)
And the copper list allow to make on-screen-changes (color rainbows, change of resolution, distort effects -waves- and ANYTHING you can manage with hardware registers)
Copper list are hard because you can't make real code, only write a register, wait for raster scan... very very limited (you "compile" the list for the frame and activate it when raster reaches bottom of screen)

EDIT: Uuuuffffffffffffffff... sorry my awful english, I can't do it better!

It seems that in joy mode the port can handle 2 button joystick.
