tried appx 5 secs and it worked. i guess its long enough to swap batteries over but swapping simm cards is a pain is the azz

lol yes now try 15seconds long and press the power button as well when the battery is out. Guaranteed that your device will be lost it's setting.

i would if i wasnt soo tired. would be worth checking if having the charger connected stops the data loss. unortunately dont have mine to hand

There is a non-recargeable backup battery in the N900. Maybe all that time with no battery in your N900 has depleted it...

I don't think there is one...Correct me if i'm wrong. But mine always been like this since out of the box. So if I ask you why would Nokia put a non-rechargable battery in a mobile device? This doesn't make any sense to the design at all.
if it is a none chargable battery then there should be replacible battery right? Unless there is not one! Else it would have been added to the manual.

Can battery be replaced on the fly when the device is on under those 10 seconds? That would be really useful feature.

The existence of the backup battery is mentioned in the service manual.

It would be, and the suggestions that this be done were ignored, or at least, it was never made to happen. This would be great for me, no more booting up after changing batteries.

The backup battery is both unable to provide that much power, and its capacity would only be enough for a split second.
