It's not an unusual thing, and tends to be caused by coils (inductors), but if it's capacitor whine that could be an indicator that the capacitor is too small for the load on it.

I have the same issue, and don't understand why it requires a DC to DC converter. Can someone explain?

DC to DC?

The charger should be AC to DC shouldn't it?

Unless you mean the "block" thing? The old Nokia chargers use a DC jack, rather than the MicroUSB on the N900. It simply converts from one shape and size adapter to another.

No it doesn't. It gets hot.

Edit: The chargers are 5 and 5,3 Volts . USB standards strike again?

With my Nokia AC-5E (800 mA, came with N95-8GB) normal 2mm_to_microUSB adapter does not work. It has to be that CA-146C adapter, which does get hot and keeps the high pitching noise.

I haven't figured out why it absolutely needs that DC-DC converter with electronics and no simple 2mm_to_microUSB adapter work.

With Nokia AC-4E (890 mA) transformer, the simple 2mm_to_microUSB adapter works.

Oh right. How strange. I assumed it would have been just a block which changes the bit you plug into your phone. I eBayed my phone, so didn't get any of the accessories with it =[ So I was only guessing =p

I love USB standards though, can charge my stuff whenever I'm near a USB port, which is the majority of the time. Although my N900 charger pumps out 1.2A, which is hugggeeeee

I understand the workings of a charger.

I just found it odd that the little converter that you plug the normal charger into whines like it does. ( And as someone said, If you turn the screen on, it stops for a while )

The box is no bigger than a small pencil rubber ( half the size of a match box maybe )

(wall)-(old charger)---------------------cable-----------(small converter)------cable----(newtypeconnector)->N900

Drove me up the wall - I use it to charge my Droid as I needed the USB cable elsewhere. I've put it in a vented enclosure with no openings at the front or top.
