It can probably be disabled by editing /etc/mce/mce.ini, removing filter-brightness-als from the list of modules.

The 5800 does this too? Then either my 5800 was malfunctioning, or its light sensor and brightness adjusting was smarter than on the N900 because I never noticed it changing brightness.

mine too, will watch where Im holding the screen next time it happens and see if this is what causes it. Weird though as only started happening in the last couple of days so I assumed something was going wrong.

Settings -> Display -> Power Saving.

Turn it off and it will solve your problems.
