It's a feature, not a bug If you press the camera button fully in one go, the camera assumes you want a picture as fast as possible, and it skips focus. Can be quite useful actually. I think it uses a preset of about 1 meter, but I could be wrong.

In my experience it is not necessary to use the macro mode for taking pictures of an A4/Letter size document, or even a part of it. It is much more important not to move the device.

Also, if you want manual focus, install Ifocus. (Quite unique for a phone!). For taking real close-up macro shots it beats the macro mode.

I hope Nokia really fix this
    Whoah..
That's is totally different thing what you are having here. Focus Problem...not hazy. And if you read through that thread you will notice that people are getting really different results. I asked many times to people reproduce it and make instructions without no luck. And also i tried to make instructions to reproduce it but with no luck. So basically we got nothing :|

Also bear in mind that in that topic there is THREE issues people are having.
    - First is greenish pictures once in a while
    - Second is hazy pictures because silver bezel on sitsuations that are really hard to reproduce
    - Thirdly blueish pictures because of lens covers edge.

You can't just say that "hopefully they fix it". Fix what? All things above. I too hope that, but if we are not able to reproduce them then itīs impossible to fix them and also i think that camera might actually be victim of bad design to point that it's not possible to fix all things by software.

    Whoa easy there ,
I'm not here for a debate or something, i bought it for 600$ and i was just dissapointed because my 200$ phone could give me better camera result.
You sound like you are the one who made this phone

I'm beginning to think i got a defect or broken product,

take a look at this pic

    [IMG[http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/1258/n9001.jpg[/IMG]

it's a photo by Shady 91 from this thread http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38660&page=34

Now i'm trying to replicate the quality by trying out the best options
(5 MP, macro mode, trying various EV, etc)

And this is what i got :

You can see that the quality is lower, and also the size is smaller,
the first one is 700KB and mine is only 400KB...

What settings do i have use to get that quality level?
Also my biggest concern is that i have to use auto focus every time i take a pic of a document, else the pic will be unreadable..

Either is a user error or your phone is faulty....If I focus properly on an A4 paper I get crystal clear pictures.....also, you need more light to take good pictures ( your 1st pictures seem to be taken in a cave of something!)....try it during the day with plenty of light and see if you get the same results.

Shoot in sunlight But seriously, you will never-ever be able to compare an outdoors shot with an indoors one (no, light from windows and doors do NOT make up for the difference).

As for paper focusing - there is a case where when the flash is enabled and the focus assist light gets too much reflection on the paper, occasionally blinding the focus software. Tilt the N900 slightly less perpendicular to the paper and focus, then realign (without releasing the focus button !) to take the actual shot (or simply disable flash if you have enough light).

I really hope it's not faulty.. for a $600 phone it's quite ashame
the first pic was taken inside my room, but even without good lighting, N73 still gave me better result (third pic)

Problem is, i've tried to take the shot so many times but the result is the same, blurry text... So i think that's not the case...
And yes, with Autofocus i get better result, but it's still worse than my N73.
I think the design is causing the camera to be in unstable position and therefore blurred the pic..

Can i ask you guys a favor?
Could you take a pic of an image with text with your N900, WITHOUT Autofocus.. then tell me if whether the text is readable or not...
And also please check your box and see where your phone was made.. mine is Made in Korea

    thanks

Here are a couple of pictures I don't know how to disable autofocus so I just took some text from a magazine in 5mp mode and in 3.5 mp mode. No flash and indoors under fluorescent lighting.

    5mp

    3.5 mp widescreen

I find the pq on the N900 to be better than my N78 which had much better optics than the N73. I wish it could focus a little faster and had better night capabilities (supposedly improved with pr 1.2).

edit : Designed in Finland made in Korea

    Thanks,
Wow, my N900 can never get to that quality..made in Korea as well? i guess it's not manufacturing problem

At first I thought the lense was scracthed or something, so i went to the store where i bought this, tried 3 different N900, and surprisingly,
ALL of them gave similar result, blurry and unreadable text image

So I think there are some possibilities :
    1. All the phones shipped to my city (Yogyakarta, Indonesia) are faulty or in "second grade" condition..
    2. Latest Firmware causing this problem..Or basically just a software not a hardware problem

I really hope it's the second one though...
I;m going to the repair center tommorow and see if they can help me...
