At least the small magnet in the back cover of N900 would sabotage the feature even if there would be digital compass.
Strange unfortunate design decision from Nokia.

You can also wreak havoc on a compass much simpler. In my example, I wear a metall wristwatch with a metaal wristband. Holding an iPhone in the same hand was enough to completely disorient its in-built compass.
