Alright, this have driven me to frustration

How can I rename a video file in the media player?

I literally tried everything possible. I renamed it from the file manager and then I went back to the media player to see it unchanged, so I tried renaming several other files from my computer using mass storage mode and it was still unchanged, and then I reset the media player caches using xterm and then re indexed the files and they still weren't ****ing changed.

    Help? I used search.

Probably the name of the video the media player shows you comes from the metadata stored inside the video file - not from the file name on the file system.
What is your video format / extension ?

Changing file name while media player is running might give unexpected results.

Changing the name of the file, over USB or locally, should work just fine.

Could you please specify, step by step, how you do it.

You mean how I did it?

let's assume that the video name is "Youtube - bla bla bla bla"
Well, I plugged my n900 via usb and then I chose mass storage, I navigated to where the video is and renamed it to "bla bla", unplugged the device and went to media player on the n900 and the video is still "youtube - bla bla bla bla" so then I cleared the media player cache using xterminal and the video is still name youtube - bla bla bla bla...

copy it to your pc, then delete it from device,
open media player until its been removed from the videos list,
then transfer the 'renamed' video back to the device
(bit of a nightmare, but that should work)

personally i cant play wmv on my device
even with 'extra decoders support' installed?

i agree with ymartin .. it might be the metadata .. can you navigate to the file and do a listing of the directory to verify the file name ?

    edit:
    default path is /home/user/MyDocs/.videos

How do you "clear the media player cache using xterminal"?

As someone wrote, the command to rename things is "mv". If you're already using an XTerminal, cd to the directory with the file and use that command. Stop the media player before doing that. If the media player still lists the files in the directory with the wrong name, something is very special.

Media Player only displays filenames if no other name/title is available (e.g. embedded in the video file).

    Whatever that means (too vague).

So did you try resetting the index of tracker?
