I live in Queens, there is very few open wifi access point in nyc nowadays. I do have internet anywhere I go because my Sprint phone has powervision.

I went to Bar Beach today and was browsing the net there.

You can make free or low-cost phone calls wherever you have a wireless internet connection, even without a cell phone. You are right, if you don't somehow have a connection to the Internet, Skype is worthless. I have wireless in my house and make free calls from there.
