err, i see that mozilla plans to reimplement actionscript3, but i see no indication that they are planning to adopt tamarin as their javascript engine.

for that they already have spidermonkey.

as best i can tell, their tamarin project is more about freeing actionscript3 from adobe, making it available wherever the source may compile.

also, didnt adobe until recently have a strict clause against re-implementations of flash? didnt gnash work have to tip toe around to make sure they didnt step on anything that may look like it was a direct port of existing flash?

It's funny Jobs is against Flash running on the iPhone but they won't even add an on/off switch or show us a video of it working poorly. Every browser on PCs have the ability to install, uninstall, enable and disable plugins, including Safari. The only reason he's doing this is to protect his precious app store which Apple receives 30% from. Don't forget about iTunes videos and music content too. instead of downloading from iTunes they can be streamed for free or for pay on their competitor's platforms with Flash.

iirc, there have been some kind of apple "mantra" that user options are bad...

its the kind of mantra that we see gnome having adopted, resulting in a lot of hot threads on various mailing lists and forums.

While I'm an active contributor to several Mozilla projects, I have not involved myself with Spidermonkey, as far as I know they will both (Spidermonkey and Tamarin) boil down on the same 'virtual machine' (NanoJIT) which is the JIT coming from the AVM2. So, in the core, they will actually use most of the AVM2 (the transition is still not complete as far as I know) for both, JavaScript and ActionScript (and `frontends` for other ECMAScript-based languages are a possibility).

Actually, it was the Macromedia that messed up that thing. The problem was that they used to license the Flash Player source code to third-party companies that wanted to implement Flash on their platforms or within their systems, and the NDA agreement was somehow reflected in the Flash Player binary EULA as well - thus making it illegal (in the USofA) to build anything that resembles the Flash Player functionality if you've already installed the Flash Player on your system while agreeing on the presented EULA. It would be hardly enforceable (after all, you can write the code and send to someone outside of USofA to commit it thus circumventing that clause) but still, you can't trust corporate lawyers, can you?

That was all dropped couple of years back, prior to Adobe releasing the AVM2, so today there is no legal obstruction for developing your own Flash Player. That's why I specifically mentioned that on the previously provided link.

There is so much history and development information it's really hard to come to any sort of educated conclusion.

I would love to read about it in one of the many new bestselling tech story books... Anyone want to write?

What I find disturbing is that they are doing HTML5 *because of* the iPad, multitouch, etc. This is especially important as HTML5 is far from enjoying across-the-board compatibility, so what they are in essence saying is *not* 'HTML5 is a good standard' but 'we're making content specifically for the iPad'. The danger is that if you're not close enough to the iPad vision of HTML5 (whether that be codec, input or any other tech related to HTML5), tough luck. Why do I have this IE5 deja vu all over again...

This is noting else like Apple direct answer to the Adobe Plans of Open Screen Project

Go there and watch those 3 movies available on the widget.

It's not only Apple on the world, and I don't thing companies want to lost their business and future plans because of one company. Apple is very aggressive these days and I'm not surprised that customers/followers buying this s**t but developers? Don't forget we have a power to choose a tools and directions. Big companies and corporations are trying to buy us but not directly. Only attract end customers and show us the possibilities.. where you can earn some MONEY! Yes as long as this world is running on this economy it's important for all of us but,

If we let them do their job it will be our responsibility not customers.
As long we have choice, competition and balance on the market is good for all of us.
The day when somebody will force me to buy Apple device because I can't watch my favorite internet TV station and for some reason HTML5 perform on IShit the best way will be my first day that I will consider to back to the deep forest and live without electricity hanging on the tree.
