i asked that about my 3 dongle and the arguement was you could use the sim for browsing and texts but calls would not likely work - accordign to threestore person

The data usage I mention is seen from my Three account online.

so, my guess is that you are (as seems logical) simply using "standard" n900 skype, which incurs data usage, when you need to use either a "skype" branded 3 mobile phone OR use a 3 specific skype client in order to benefit from their offer. Accoding to http://www.three.co.uk/Internet_Serv...all_chat/Skype you need a compatible handset and a download. N900 is not in the compatible list.

So, if you are making skype calls via n900 phone application (i.e. you've registered your skyp accoint in Voip/IM accounts) then I'd expect you to incur data charges for such calls.

i tried putting the sim in and it recognisedmitmas a 3 sim but when i tried to go online it said something like no access piont defined, when i tried asking three for the settings they said they could only send me the mobile internet settings and that i would be charged for any data i used and it would not come off my 15gb allowance,
eventualy (when i can afford it ill get a wireless router for the dongle, i just need to find a solution till then.

APN: 3internet
password: leave blank
username leave blank

I believe these are the settings for three mobile broadband (mobile internet has APN three.co.uk). However I have not tried this msyelf, no idea if it will just work or if Three are dong anything 'smart' to detect that the SIM is in a smartphone rather than a dongle. So if you set up your conection with that info, be sure that you monitor closely to see that your 15G data allowance is used or you cold start racking up charges. Caveat emptor :-)

Not sure about 3 UK, but I'm using a 3 AU broadband account SIM (post-paid) in my N900 without any issues.

As quoted i did need to setup the APN but after doing that everything is working fine. Also on the Skype call thing, I've tried the 3 branded skype calling on a previous phone and it does route over the voice network and the app uses data just to update your status (etc).

When using the n900 with the 3 account the data used comes off my monthly allowance. This is no different to using the dongle in my laptop (same APN, 3netaccess in AU).

You can order free PAYG SIMs here:
https://www.three.co.uk/Pay_As_You_G...der_a_free_SIM

I've used a Three PAYG SIM that was given away at a train station around Christmas time in my N900. I didn't have to do any APN / credentials setup - it configured itself.
