I really don't get why people are taking this request for portrait mode so drastically. I came from having a N810 Internet Tablet to using the N900, and there was different expectations using a tablet than a phone.

I really liked my N810 and I still do. I don't think it required a portrait mode, due to it being a gadget which primarily was not used as often on the move. I would tend to use it somewhere with wifi and a comfortable chair.

Clearly Nokia has noticed this lack of portrait in the N900 already early on, since already in October 2009 there were reports of the Maemo 6 having portrait mode. Since anyway Maemo 5 is supposet to be the fourth step in this five step goal at Nokia, to a so called "finished" product. Why not test this feature before it is released in the next iteration of Maemo/Meego?

Hrm; works fine for me. I see no failure to deliver anything that I need here.

Show me another phone that I can write and code a GUI app (PyQt) directly on the phone; with no computer; and run it. Or another phone that uses X-Chat as an IRC client; something I'm already well accustomed to using. Or one that if I like something on my desktop; I can simply re-compile it in an SDK and put it on the phone. No coding knowledge even necessary there.

The fact that I can't set a different ringtone per contact? Lacking portrait mode? Waayyyyyy in the back of the list of a **** I need/want out of a "phone".

(this is why it is very accurate to call this a mobile computer; and not a "phone"; as the latter implies certain things this lacks - and this lacks it because a computer does not need it/them.)

arhhhhhhhh.
That dude ruined Nokia's easter egg of portrait for apps, like the portrait for browser was added to 1.1 while the official with the buttons and all was coming on 1.2, similarly there would have been a 1.3 with option to switch to portrait rather than using the keyboard combination.

they can say everythiing they want, but its a smartphone it has a vibra call, sms, vcards, ringtones, sim card reader and basics features that a nokia 3310 (that isnt a tablet) has! update yourself
the n810 is a tablet... the ipad too... etc but not the n900

I haven't read all of the posts in this thread but did u guys try out portrait mode in Application Manager. It works flawlessly. and so less scrolling now

And what do you use to make phone calls? Or maybe because you spend all your time "programing" you maybe have only one friend and therefore different ringtones don't matter eh?

This device was supposed to be THE BEST device out there. Show me any other device without options for the end user like this one.

Why don't you code a twitter app straight on the N900 and make it available for everyone? Why don't you code a decent "rotate-me" so people would stop complaining? It's been 7 months since the launch!!

Can anyone explain me WHY is that so difficult? The excuse of "this is a computer with phone capabilities" is not an excuse anymore! I can use my 22 inch widescreen monitor in PORTRAIT mode using Vista or XP, how hard is for Maemo to do that?

I wish someome could come here and explain WHY, becase evryday we see more and more people giving up with this marvellous piece of hardware, just because the SO is not up to the task.

My Android arrives tomorrow. I was forced to change. My N900 will stay with me for couple of months waiting for the silent Nokia to do something about what the MAJORITY of users WANT, and not a handfull of geek guys making the absolut nonsense use for the unit.

Because the bigger your screen is (compared to the GUI elements), the easier is it to flip modes. Your vista or XP is technically not doing any better than Maemo, it’s just that on Maemo that behaviour looks a lot worse due to the size of GUI elements, so it is turned off by default.

I don't recall seeing anyone (in their right mind) claiming this. This device is the best device for me (right now) - but is by no means the best device out there. There is already another phone, running android, with near identical hardware. Someone lied to you.

I very well could code a twitter app straight on the N900 and make it available for everyone. That's a tad masochistic; but most certainly an achievable measure - but not with any other phone or device. One problem though: I don't twitter. I see no purpose to it nor do I care for it. Why would I code for it? Why not go yell at Twitter for not releasing an app for your phone?

Also, FaceBrick is coming for FaceBook, and a search for Twitter in my app manager shows two promising results and a handful of others: Witter, and Tweego - not to mention a plugin that looks to integrate it right into Contacts and Conversations, just like my Facebook/ICQ/AIM/Yahoo/etc is.

Also, it's been 7 months since launch and the phone comes without MMS. Yet here we have a totally workable, useful fMMS app that is tricked so well that it almost feels and looks integrated with the rest of the phone.

Ask the iPhone users how long they had to wait for MMS support...

Portrait mode is already available; it's just not automatic. It's up to the dev's of the apps to code in support for portrait mode. This actually makes sense, if you ask me, because portrait mode really changes the dimensions of the phone. My pyPianobar, for example, if all the buttons simply rotated 90 degrees when you turned your phone would look kind of silly. It's up to me to code a "portrait" interface; and then use the code in my app to watch for and trigger the portrait switch. It's not Nokia's fault my app doesn't use portrait, it's mine. Lay the blame where it belongs.

Software right now is on hold primarily because Nokia, for some reason, updated the SDK to PR1.2 compat and broke (some) compatibility with non PR1.2 devices. And then, in their infinite wisdom, decided to hold onto PR1.2 like their life depended on it until it became the worst kept secret, ever. (I certainly hope no one's life depended on it, cuz they failed.)

I certainly offer no excuses to why PR1.2 is delayed. I will actually laugh quite loudly if I see a MeeGo 1 announcement with full GUI released before PR1.2. That will just be comedic to me.
