As the developer of QSportsEvent, I'd also like to know! Basically it has to do with the version of Qt that the apps are compiled with. The apps in Extras-Devel are compiled with Qt4.6 (the development framework used to build such apps), which will only be available on the N900 once PR1.2 is out. I think the idea was that PR1.2 was about to be released within a few days of making the change to the Extras-Devel, but we all know what happened to that...

If there is no easy alternative solution, how do I remove the application from Extras-Devel until such time when it will be possible to install it? I fear many of my potential users are getting frustrated by the installation error messages and might give up on it altogether...

If you do want to install it, you can do it 'manually' following the instructions in the QSportsEvent Wiki. The version of the app you can find from there is compiled on my own machine, thus using Qt4.5 and you won't have the same issue.

Hmm... Are you using an N900 (Fremantle) or N8x0 (Diablo)? So far this issue has only been seen on Diablo.
