Well I guess I fall far more into the hate posters camp than fanboy camp.

For me it is a case of watching youtube videos obsessively for like 3 months on a daily basis before the device came out and then travelling all the way to US from the UK to buy it because I could not bear to wait till it was available in the UK (well I really went for the thanksgiving sales but the N900 was what tipped the decision in favour of going to the states).

So I was totally hyped for the device but when I got it:

(i) found out the media player can only be described as a piece of **** (when I planned for this to be my mp3/mp4 player);

(ii) have a device that is always freezing up. Can hardly bear to use the web browser on it because the device is always freeze unfreeze and when I swipe to scroll down it is frozen then as a result of its freeze unfreeze when it unfreezes it records a swipe as a tap and so always takes me into a selection/new page.

(iii) due to Nokia making faulty devices (faulty usb ports) I can only charge from a PC. Not ideal considering I have to charge the thing 3 times a day. And cause I got it from the US and live in the UK can't even fix it under warranty without loads of hassle.

I guess most of the hate posters are genuinely unhappy users, but I do get suspicious about the people with one post who seemed to register just to start a thread sating that they are unhappy with the device.

etuoyo:

You can buy a charger and spare batteries and eliminate point 3 for a small amount of money -- it cost me about $25. I never use a PC or usb port for charging.

For me it isn't so much as making the wrong choice because on paper the phone is what I want. It is a failure on marketing and a realistic appraisal (Both in the selling process from EXpansys detailing so little, me looking and not using before buying and more importantly NOKIA QA allowing it to be released with so much missing).
I found this forum before hand but too many fanboys filled it, and my phone was already ordered before things like an MMS lack of support and poor build quality became an issue (back cover, no video calling software for the hardware, the duff cable socket, the internal charging socket). So for me the options list should have a "Misleading hype and complete lack of support from Nokia for basic tasks." Tick box option.

I know people have said GSM is an optional extra (tell vodaphone that), that MMS was very clearly labelled on some distant small print that no one can find except Nokia legal employees, but my research had this as a "good phone with community support". Not "internet tablet, poor phone with much needed community development to further it".

I am not a hate poster as I haven't started a thread. I am however one very unhappy and never again to be Nokia customer. Xterminal is not a scary proces for me as I like Linux and use Ubuntu on all my machines. However 'jail breaking' it, 14 apps and three wikis to get what I had in my previous phone or even a basic phone (Still can't sync' to exchange) and you can see why there are sooo many unhappy people with it.

My tuppence.

The build quality on the back of my n900 is soo bad I wouldn't dare remove the cover for fear of breaking it. You are brave indeed.

The back cover is quite robust. It acts as my quit button for openarena.

On-topic: It is in part due to Nokia's advertising. But much more so on people's failure to do research. A simple look at maemo.org before the N900 came around would instantly deter any geek/nerd-phobes.

Even my 14 year old peers understand this. Despite all of the N900's features, they recognize it as out of their depth, and refrain from buying it, saving us from teenage trolls...

(If memory serves, the non-geek in pre-Fremantle itt/tmo would be heartily welcomed and tolerated, but now... well... just have a look at one of the threads that is always in "Active Topics.")
