This is just the 'life saver' I've been looking for. I know nothing about scripts etc, so please, in laymans terms, what file name do I save the script as, and what do I need to type into xterminal to get it to work, or is there a gui way of doing it?

.
Then "chmod +x script.sh" to make it executable. Now you can start it from Terminal or shortcut.
