Besides the composite noise, which has its own VHS-ish retro charme, i noticed annoying gradient artifacts when ambiguous colours and dark areas are shown while watching movies via TV-Out, even crisp Hi-Q HD2DVD-rips. It looks like the either the device or the tv has problems interpreting certain murky shades, so it paints them in a crappy and confused way.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but it has already been stated that the N900 has been amputated to 16bit colour depth (65k) by the OS but is capable of performing better, so i assume the TV-Out gets this value as well, which causes the artifacts? 16bit may be sufficient for the N900's display but for TV-Out it's apparently not, again assuming standard definition LCD-TV's play with a broader colour palette.

It definitely doesn't sound like an easy task, but how about increasing the output signal to 18bits (262k) or even higher? I don't know that much about video, but if what i have written above isn't all trash, it would result in an overall better picture, despite the composite noise.
