Eh, the operative word is "measurably". That can be subjective. But I admit I would be more inclined to agree with subtle hardware changes implemented for improved stability as well as reduced power consumption.

Yep, I agree 100% there - I'm just concerned that any changes which affect the behaviour of the processing subsystems (memory, CPU, video) could result in further platform fragmentation which is the last thing we need right now, the N800 and "N801" should be functionally indistinguishable to software except in the area of WiMax.

I'd actually prefer that someone comes up with a Wimax/Wifi transciever as a standalone box that has a footprint similar to my iBlue GPS or Fon router. It would be more generically useful for existing N800s and laptops. I haven't seen such a thing.

Or a WiMax/Bluetooth transceiver module, with built-in GPS! How sweet would that be? Then again a future Nokia N-series phone may appear with support for Bluetooth, WiFi, WiMax, 3G and GPS all in one unit which would be the ultimate companion for an N800-class device.

I'd rather Nokia give all of us current N800 owners a chance to "upgrade" to the new 800 at a reduced price.

like they gave all 770 owners upgrade vouchers/discounts when they introduced the n800? ....wait, that didn't happen

I think it is unlikely that there will be the two HW versions you are talking about as the N801 and N900. I think there will be a single update to the HW that will happen sometime in 2008.

As to not making any other HW changes (to the video bandwidth or otherwise), I understand the concern that it not cause another fork in software development. But if the IT is to be a fully realized computer, HW abstraction is a very important goal and maybe HW improvements can be made without affecting SW.

Whatever. As far as I'm concerned, what they do (or not) in 2008 is their last chance to get it right, as a platform.

Humbug to the whole wi-max thing anyway.
I'm pretty damned satisfied with my N800 now that it fully supports VoIP, runs Skype, and has both Opera and Mozilla web browsers on it.
