Really...? This was suggested on the developer list as a way to create a shortcut to the root of the system for normal file browsing to work. I've done it and hadn't noticed any problems, unless that's the cause of some of my battery drain.

Yep, that will drain your battery big time. The media searching app goes into a loop.

does anyone else think it might be related to a bad SD cards? my n800 seems fine now I removed both SD cards, one of which was corrupt.

It makes sense. Linux would constantly be trying to re-read sections of the card and that would take CPU + battery.
