Design a whole new one? You just need to take that already-tried-and-tested battery and make it bigger...

Anyway, I guess this won't change the fact that my N900 won't survive more than a day so it's something I'll have to accept.

Im now in my 4th month with my n900 and have had no issues at all, however after hearing about the usb port comming loose i was a little worried and i felt that the charger/usb lead was putting too much pressure on the port when i pulled it out.
So what ive done is apply gentle pressure to the charger/usb lead where it plugs into the n900 to make the clips that hold it in slightly lower in the plug.
It still stays in securely but i no longer feel like im gonna pull something loose when i pull them out.

the screen protector that came with my otterbox is copletely invisible. i have forgotten its even there, friends often ask why i dont use a screen protector because they dont realize that there is one already on the device. otterbox ftw.!

A few keys on the right side are loosing the black ink (the white details seems to resist more), it is starting to happen to the shift key too; there is a little hole on the left side of the screen that has been gradually growing getting eroded further, it's big enough to catch the stylus tip when i move it over; there are a couple of small nicks on the case here and there, the screen slider is lock slightly less stiffly (sp?) ; the USB plug is a tad loose and somtimes seems to have a bit of bad contact; somtimes i get the impression the internal memory might be on the edge of failure, nothing definitive though; also i'm several months overdue for a total reflash, slowdowns are more and more often, keep loosing calls due to sudden drop of responsiveness, somtimes the thing even reboots 'cause it slowed down for so long it thinks it has crashed instead of just being slow.

But even with all the flaws and weardowns, i wouldn't accept any other device currently on the market as replacement; nothing out there can beat this little monster (there are some specialized devices that do perform one thing or another better, but no single device can do as much, and the N900 isn't lousy at all at most of things it does)

Probably she is only using the pads of her fingers to interact with it, or if not I would assume her fingernails are generally infinitely cleaner than mine - I had a 5800 screen that was scratched all over - partly from the stylus, but mostly from my fingernails. Hard lesson learned. I was far more careful with the N900, no scratches at all in about a year of use.

Wait...i don't think our N900s use the same type of screens; mine when under sunlight looks worse than an old B&W LCD with dead backlight being viewed from the side...

I've had my N900 for over a year now, the USB port has stopped working with my wall charger & usb cable, now unable to charge or transfer files from my pc. I'm now using an external desktop battery with two extra batteries. My warranty has long since gone. I do not know how this issue can be fixed. Now contemplating if I should look into getting a new N900, wait for the N9, or look at other smartphones (i.e. Iphone 5, Samsung Galaxy S2, or any Android?)---Ray from Southern California

Regarding wear & tear, I got a new N900 yesterday to replace my old one. The new one feels completely different, as I wrote here:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=75249

Surfaces feel more gritty, all mechanical moving actions feel much tighter and tougher, etc. I must say though, the slider feels smoother already, but it may also be me getting used to it.

I've also always used a screen protector and always will. The first thing I did after checking that this device powers on was install one. Not having to fear scratches makes using a resistive touch screen with your fingernails or the stylus so much more relaxed and casual.
