fsck is only a filesystem check utility, it doesn't "destroy" anything.
You need to be root to do it.
(The CHKDSK function in windows is the same)

ok, so after the file system check u do a reboot. does that fix the memory card problem or is there more to it? i did it and i just did a reboot but i still cant seem to delet a particular file from my memory card nor can i edit it or do anything other than view the contents of it. I started a thread on a similar issue not too long ago. I just thought i would tag on when i saw your file system check post to see if maybe i can find the answer there. here is the link if u care to check it out. if not thanks for your help thus far

I had a similar problem - backup wouldn't create backups on the external card and the camera crashed when saving to that location.

For me the solution was to ssh into the phone, unmount the card and 'fsck -y' it before remounting.

Works fine now.
