Is it "Happy owner of a N900" or "Happy owner of an N900"
I honestly don't know.

Just point to it and say "I own this." and be done with it.

That was my concern as well but I've just write it down from somebody's else signature trusted that he knew.

EDIT:
But I was also considering an option THE N900 instead...

The issues are non existent; we understand each other perfectly so there has never been, and I doubt there will be a need for a third way to complicate something that's not a problem.

American English has evolved away from 'The Queen's' English just as English (spoken by the British) has evolved away in another direction. They will continue to evolve and change. It is the sign of a healthy, vibrant language. Spanish in Mexico and Spain, Portuguese in Portugal and Brazil along with French in Canada and France. All, I believe also have similar differences and yet are understandable to all speakers of their particular example.
