when i start updater it says no update available or when i go to the update on the phone what could be wrong

make sure system software repo is enabled. or flash it..

Did you see which version your N900 is? You should have the latest 1.1.1 version installed befoe, did you?
Did you overclock? One of those reasons could mean you have to flash your N900. Make sure you make a backup on your MMC (SD card) before! I did not check the place of the backup files and flashed EMMC (the 32 chip on the nokia) too. You can search for instructions in Nokia conversations blog (google), they are very clear on how to do it.

it says your device already has the latest rx-51 2.2009.51.1
im on windows 7 x64 i tried updating on phone but i get failed catalogues mostly i cannot find the full list of them online,nothing but trouble since i got this phone any help appreciated

You are not the only one. Here is the US many people are having the same problem. I finally got tired of waiting and installed it manually. See here for what is involved:
