Hello,

I'm trying to play video on my nokia N900 and I get the "Unable to play media. Video codec not supported." For some of the files I want to play.
the file I want tp play works aok on a windows xp machine.

I did a search in the forums and one of the options mentioned was to install extras-testing repository or extras codecs pack or something like here:
http://forums.internettablettalk.com...ad.php?t=47152

but in different thread there is a warning not to do so:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=45682
for example "Please DO NOT send people to Extras-Testing or Extras-Devel without a huge warning that the software over there can be unstable and in the first case brick your device."

1) Are there codec packs for N900 I need to install? Can you please give links/references/instructions etc?
2) how can I handle the "Unable to play media. Video codec not supported." message?
3) can I have the videos working with the default player or do I need to download and work with alternative player (is it a must or nice to have to overcome that problem)?
4) what other goodies there are related to the multimedia in N900?

Thank you.

I only have the default player and am able to play everything ive tried, the extra codecs pack in extras testing/devel is fine, the warning is just there because some of the apps in those repo's maybe unfinnished or not optified (use too much space in rootfs), however ive downloaded many of them myself without any major problems,
i would recomend you install healthcheck so you can monitor your rootfs space and check it after any new download, also doing a power search on the app you want will let you know how other people are getting on with it.
Personaly i think that having the testing/devel repo's enabled is easily worth it for all the extra content it opens up.

Here's the link: http://maemo.org/downloads/product/M...ders-support/:)

when you transfer the video files across are you moving them to your hard drive or to a Micro SD card?

Only reason I ask is that I had the same issue trying to play vids but turned out to be the card. An easy check would be to connect you N900 to you PC via mass storage mode and try to play the file stored on your phone but using your PC media player (ie just open the file using you pc)..
