Some Russian hackers have posted the code causing this. It appears that what happens is they dial a specific number which causes Skype to crash. Not only that, but when it crashes, it tries to move the call to another server... causing it to crash too.. and so on and so forth until the entire service and every one of their servers is down.
And Skype says that's just FUD, that's it was an internal error in their own software.

Of course they're going to say that no matter what happened.

The official word:

Skype: Outage Caused by Massive Restart After Users Had Downloaded Windows Patches

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- A two-day outage that left millions of Skype users unable to use the popular Internet phone service was caused by an abnormally high number of restarts after people had downloaded a Windows security update, the company said Monday.

The worldwide outage, which began on Thursday and ended on Saturday, left millions of Skype users unable to log on to make phone calls or send instant messages.

That's why it's always good to have a backup VoIP service like Gizmo.
Same thing as having two analog telephone lines, never put all your VoIP eggs in one basket.

As I said, they will say anything to try to make things look better for themselves. First it was mass installations of Windows updates (wtf) and now this.
