Aaron: I meant it's a method that differs from the Wiki entry found at iTT... if ya follow it as a step by step list. You're totally correct though, they're identical. There were a bunch of Windows users that were simply lost when it came to having some kind of windows boot, so I typed that up. I thought I'd put enough disclaimers that in no way was any of that invented by me, thought of by me, or to be passed off as being by me. My main point behind that 20 minutes of typing was to a.) put all the needed reference material in one spot, and b.) make it painfully clear so people who aren't familiar with Linux could give it a shot. I'm having anneurysms hitting all the different sources to grab snippets of information.
Have you considered enhancing the wiki at maemo.org? I think that's the main place that people go to do determine how to do this. Perhaps you could create an additional wiki page that discusses how to "use" flasher on Windows (with the information about installing vmware, etc.). There are already wiki pages for how to use flasher on Linux and Mac OS X, and a page for Windows would complement them nicely.
There's a thought. I'm a database goon by trade, I took a look at the existing Wiki entry and wasn't satisfied with any way I could slip it in. I hate tutorials/how-tos that trail off halfway through with "now go to step 6 of 'xxx' ". Well. Such is the nature of Wikipedia. If someone thinks the VMPlayer install/etc would fit in better somewhere else, they're welcome to change it. I've got to get going in about 30 mins so I'll get to it when I've got time.

The existing "how do I get root" wiki page at maemo.org makes sense if you are starting from already having flasher working. Once flasher is working, this page works as stated. The "getting root" part of your instructions has basically the same content as the wiki entry at maemo.org. The "how do I get flasher working" part of your instructions has no counterpart at the maemo wiki.
Done. I put myself in the shoes of someone who's very new to Linux and the Maemo Wiki is rather terse. That's my first Wiki entry, wasn't too hard to pick up.

Hedgecore-- Can I send you some edits/corrections? At minimum, I'd prefer that the official name for the product was used... :-)
Perhaps a pretty stoopid question, but I assume since I'm already running Kubuntu that I don't need the VMware steps. Just making sure VMware isn't doing some magic.
You are quite right, of course. While it may seem obvious, since we are assuming the guide/howto is for clueless users, it would be nice if it was very clear that this is a method for:
a)"installing" the Linux-flasher under windows using VMware and a Linux image;
b)gaining root.
Of course it could be extended to reflash the device with newer images or entering USB-host mode. I wonder if this is still needed for novice Windows users now that there is a Windows-based flasher available?
Absolutely. I'm sorry if that rubbed anyone the wrong way. Please feel free to either send me the information via private message here or if you're up for it you can edit the Wiki entry as you see fit.
