Everyone is always going on about "Must have Apps for N900" - someone should just make an App that exports all App names and descriptions to a text file and then it can easily be uploaded. If you wanted to go one step further you could make a database and see what Apps most people have and have a ranking system. Just an idea.

considering that only some users would install this and fill the database, this link may be more reliable to see which applications are popular:

One thing really baffles me. Why on earth download section does not have de facto sort by "popularity", "Downloads" or "Ratings". Or should these kinds of stuff go trough brainstorm sessions. (Or should we say forgetstorm)

That does not have testing and dev. A lot of great apps there.

right. i'm not saying such an application/database woudn't be nice. its just that the downloads-charts i linked to seem to be more relevant:
1) they count each and every user's downloads and don't rely on those who happen to have a certain helper-application installed.
2) to see which applications are most popular, i *think* extras is enough. i just don't believe any application from devel or testing would be more popular than, say, fmms or the fm radio.

of course the application proposed here could do something else that's also interesting: not count downloads as the server does, but count those packages that remain installed on the user's device.

That is exactly what I was thinking;

Step 1: Generate a list of installed applications and their descriptions that are on the device.

Step 2: Upload info into a database that shows more or less "What are the must have Apps for the N900"

I am not talking about download count, that is pretty useless with the N900 due to the fact that updates and every time someone restores a backup that would count a as another download. Simply viewing what applications are installed would be very beneficial, especially for someone like me who doesn't have all the time in the wold to check on what is the newest coolest things that are so must have.
