if your phone shows a 3G or 3.5G connection, you are using the 3G network, built at huge expense by the operators (for both licence and infrastructure).

2.5G is a way of wringing a bit more performance from the old 2G network.

Of course, just cos your operator advertises their 3G network as 'upto 7.2Mb/s' doesn't mean you will get anywhere near the theoretical max in practice. Use www.speedtest.net over a few tests in different locations to see what speeds you can achieve in the real world - but you can trust the hone when it shows you the connection type, it is telling you the type of physical data connection it has established.

I had this sh*t earlier today, they said they could move me to a tariff with a 1GB allowance for the same price, but that my "unlimited" texts would be reduced to 500, but I'd still get unlimited texts to vodafone numbers (wow! )

Since the link that trelirodia posted (http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/forum-53...rnet-charging/) CLEARLY states

The handsets this applies to are: HTC Touch Pro 2, HTC Desire, Google Nexus One (which was previously 1GB), HTC HD2, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Samsung Galaxy S or Nokia N900.
this is totally unacceptable, as according to that article I should be able to get double the date allowance, with exactly the same minutes and text allowance that I have at the moment. The article mentions having to lose text allowance etc if you're on an older YC or YE contract, but I'm definitely on a YP contract.

. I've sent a secure message on the Vodafone website to customer services as I didn't get anywhere with the person on the phone I spoke to.

    Any tips?

DO NOT "UPGRADE" TO 1GB DATA PLAN!

It is a HARD cap. Its is not a FUP. The minute you go 1.001Gb in your data allowance, you will be charged £5. No notice will be given to you, and you will not get a text.

Plus if you accept this "deal", you will not be able to cancel.

This is not an UPGRADE. IT IS A DOWNGRADE.

You signed up to "Unlimited" internet, and not a HARD CAP.

DONT UPGRADE TO 1GB PLAN. Stay on 500Mb FUP, keep going over, and you will not be charged. Then cancel once you will be charged!

I got this the other in an email, so i replied with a straight no and told them what the forum post stated.

Next day i get an email saying they kept my mins and text the same and just "upgraded" to 1Gb.

I know its a hard cap but going to 500mb a month is not common for me at all so this 1Gb suits me just fine. The only way you could get so high is with streaming music and iplayer. Just put the music on your phone and quit whining maybe?! (Im just saying!)

Do not assume because your bill is £35 a month, that them charging you £5 will be a 10% increase. It does not work like that.

They go off your last bill.

If you rang 5 0870 numbers, and together they cost you £6, add that to your bill that is £41. Then lets say the next month you DO NOT ring any 0870 numbers so you bill is £35, but you get charged £5 for data, your bill would be £40. Compare that to the previous month and it DOES NOT increase your bill by 10% so you won't be able to cancel.

    Be aware of that!

As you can cancel your contract - would now be a good time to join o2?

I'm not sure if this is correct, but their new pricing doesn't appear to start until the new iphone is released on 24th june - so can i buy a sim only contract with them now with unlimited data, which won't change on the 24th?
