a) Did you check that they are deleted from the contacts by entering contacts? If you tried to "add" them and they were already added, they don't show up. This is not unheard of. Usually restarting Hildon fixes it. If not, power off, remove battery, replace battery, power on. IN THAT ORDER, pulling battery while phone is on or shitting down can corrupt your FS.
b) Did you delete the contacts from desktop? Delete <> remove.
c) Did you relinquish the possession of the phone at any time? Someone could have easily clicked the wrong button. (Think hard)

All the contacts that were on any desktop were deleted both from the desktops and also from the contacts directory.
Only has happened once now, but a pain in the a**.
