hildon-desktop sits around 1-2 cpu when i activate the menu it goes upto 10-11. what is it normally?


ps. where is the percent button on the n900?

appmefo is the smae thing I did except it has a gui. you souldnt use it if you dont want to risk flashing your device. I just noticed catorize-gui in app manager has anybod tryed it?

%CPU for hildon-desktop will naturally fluctuate, but at rest should be below 1%. This % is as read from the small utility called Conky. If hildon-desktop sits around 5 to 15%CPU more or less constantly then there likely is a problem.

Catorise unfortunately invokes this problem, as does MyMenu. Apparently ApMeFo does not.

I think it's too soon to say. The assumption it's to do with the local file or the system one doesn't stand up to the reproduction instructions on #10412:

I added a new attachment: hd_test.tar. It contains my setup for creating
submenus (a few icons and a few xx.directory files)

extract hd_test.tar in /home/user
cd /home/user/.config/menus
mv hildon.menu.nn hildon.menu

now follow the steps in note 14 and 15...
I've not seen this problem with PR1.2 & Catorise, so I wonder if it's a particular .desktop file which triggers it - that could explain a number of the effects.

And would one of those be the extent of CPU utilisation? Some report hildon-desktop at 15%. I have it at ca. 5% when the bug bites. Now going by your bug comment, would the % scale to the ratio of shortcuts or widgets to apps, or some such?

Am happy to send you any files as may be helpful...

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with Catorise; I've noticed battery drain with PR1.2, so I uninstalled Catorise and observed the phone carefully. The CPU% dropped from constant 5-8% to mostly 0%. I reinstalled Catorise and started using it, and I saw the CPU utilisation rise again. Used it for a few days, then uninstalled again; the CPU usage dropped again and is now low. I was careful not to install or reconfigure any other software during this test, so Catorise is the culprit or, more likely, a trigger for the hildon bug.

Yes, as above. Catorise isn't the culprit, any sub-sections in the menu (no matter how they're created) seems to trigger it for some users. However, the impact/visibility and severity of the bug seem to vary from person to person. If you can provide additional information as to what software you have installed on 10412, that'd probably be helpful.

I'm saddened to read about these battery issues. Just installed Categorize and it looks like almost exactly how the menu should look like, just missing the point that an application can have several categories. I guess that would be an easy fix. Battery not so much, unless Nokia plans on more PR updates? Choices choices...
