Catorise unfortunately invokes this problem, as does MyMenu. Apparently ApMeFo does not.
I added a new attachment: hd_test.tar. It contains my setup for creating
submenus (a few icons and a few xx.directory files)
extract hd_test.tar in /home/user
cd /home/user/.config/menus
mv hildon.menu.nn hildon.menu
now follow the steps in note 14 and 15...

I've not seen this problem with PR1.2 & Catorise, so I wonder if it's a particular .desktop file which triggers it - that could explain a number of the effects.
