Hey guys,

I'm having a current problem with a new Modem-Router that I acquired recently.

I live with my girlfriends parents and we've always used a terrible old Belkin G-Router that barely works and often just loses connection for several hours for no reason.....

I've been working with Belkin recently and as a bonus they gave me a shiny new Belkin PlayMax Router (Very Shiny)

The new router is better in pretty much every way and I'm loving the product.

The problem is the Speed of the internet.
On my older G-Router I was running consistently at 960kbps (I realise thats fairly terrible....I live in a tiny village) but with the new one it'll barely top 400kbps.
All the settings are correct and I've checked them with the ISP but for some reason the Connection is just so dam slow.....I really don't want to revert back to the older router as it really is a pile......but I can't live on less than half a meg....

Please, Someone help

Do you get full speed through a wired port?

Are all QOS settings turned off?

Look at the connection info, and check whether the DSL connection has established to the right speed.

Is your MTU (1492 for DSL) set correctly? Who is your provider? What FW version is it running on?

I think thnat your fundamental problem is that you are living with your G/F's parents

sorry, just couldn't resist!

if you swap between the 2 routers, is the speed difference consistant (i.e. can you be sure that you haven't disturbed the physical wiring at the main wall socket whilst swapping out the old router?). Unlikely, but if you have an old install it could be a bit sensitive to shoogling.

How do you check the speed?
Single connection to a speedtest website or by running a torrent client?

ps: how did you get into that living arrangement?

the router will show the established link speed (which is negotiated between router & DSLAM each time connection is established). it is a theoretical figure as it doesn't cater for protocol overheads etc. but IMO it is a better indication of relative speed for this kind of scenario - at least until it is established that each router is achieving fairly consistant speeds over multiple sessions (i.e. that the problem is related to router config, rather than transient DSL network conditions and/or SNR variations due to local wiring).

Okay.....

1st: QOS is turned off and I use both (my 360 through a Home Ethernet Adaptor and my Laptop through 5ghz N)

2nd: Gone through connection info and checked with the ISP.

3rd: MTU is 1492 as advised by the ISP

4th: The Broadband set up is fine, Switching between the two just kills Modem speed.... bizarre.

5th: Router itself and running Speedtests

6th: The router is showing 416kbps old one shows 968kbps

So there we have it, lots of questions answered
And to answer the niggling question, I live with my girlfriend at her parents house. I was kicked out of my Mums house because she's psychotic, I've lived here for just over a year. Moving to Ireland in two months so happy days!

Anyone got any ideas on what this could be? its incredibly bizarre.

Sounds like your router isn't negotiating the correct speed with your ISP. Might want to call their tech support and tell them about it. I've had that happened on my DSL connection and usually a connection refresh on their end corrects the issue.

Btw, I'm glad that you got the important things sorted out. Good luck with the move
