I'm considering getting a N900...I do not have a smartphone and never had one. I will not pay for a data plan. I have AT&T.

1. I've read that it is possible to get around the data plan requirement by having ATT put a datablocker on your phone. Has many people had much success with that and the N900?

2. Will the phone work perfectly and not nag you if you use the phone as a computer not connected to a phone service (ATT)?

I might try the phone with ATT and if they add the data plan, remove the sim card, go back to my old phone, and just use it as a computer. I'd rather buy it for $400 than a netbook for $300.

Thanks.

1. http://forums.wireless.att.com/t5/AT...de/m-p/1548680

Don't know why it wouldn't work with N900 just as good as with any another (unlocked?) phone?

2. I haven't heard or experienced any problems that occur when using n900 without sim card. Try search to find if there is any.

Thanks.

Another question...since the N900 is unix based - can you use the phone (wifi settings, installing apps, etc) without the command prompt, is it fully GUI based?

Reason I ask is because I've used Linux off and on over the past 10 years, and it was aggravating having to Google command prompts to do simple tasks despite a GUI.

Would the N900 be like that, or can it be entirely GUI based?

Of course not, Nokia would shoot itself in its foot by publishing phone like that

You can do some trivial tasks with terminal but it is not a must. You can live without it completely. For example, I've used terminal to:

- view cpu load and memory usage via top-command (there is an app for that too though if you don't want to use terminal)
- add a shortcut to desktop to quickly open ssh connection via script
- change cpu:s voltage and clock settings to improve performance (check overlocking thread if you're interested)

Very true. But I watched Linux shoot itself in the foot for many years being user unfriendly. So I'm weary of anything Unix based.

But would love to use it if it's not unfriendly, which looks like the N900 might be the one.

I am also on AT&T and have no data plan.
I did not put a data block on my account, rather I modified the settings on the wireless data connection. Replacing the password or access point name to something fictitious, will prevent any connection from occurring.
The only time I am ever prompted to connect to any internet connection is, when I start the camera app with geotagging enabled.

Everything I've read and researched this weekend says ATT is mandating data plans on EVERYBODY with a smart phone, even with unlocked phones. Their systems detects it and automatically applies a data plan to the account.

Anybody else running without a datablock and no data plan?

You won't need a data plan with the n900 and att. They don't know about unlocked phones.

/off

The keyboard input - terminal is the easiest and most reliable way to communicate with the computer and tell it what to do. If you don`t like it ok, but don`t make statements regarding Linux being unfriendly due to terminal.Try to love it, you won`t regret it
