I know this of little use post-factum, but why go around the backup feature?

Prior to a full flashing I exported contacts into the microSD in both
formats 2.1 & 3 VCard.
Now, trying to "get contacts .. folder.." from the same location the phone is unable to import all -but most; 1026- but would import any individual VCard on its own no problem.
Is there a way to restore contacts to its full glory!?
