By sign up you mean purchase a plan right? Be it contract or pre-paid?
actually if you did not yet sign up for contract or pre paid i suggest you look for simple mobile. It's pre paid
unlimited minutes, unlimited global texting, unlimited nationwide texting, unlimited WEB IM , surfing.. everything it runs via t mobile so you will have3G
40$ unlimited minutes , text
50$ unlimited minutes , text , 150 mb of web i think
60$ unlimited everything << so i just moved from t mobile to simple mobile basically same thing but all i have to do is either go to local simple mobile store or order credit for my phone online.
No, I don't think so. But if you don't plan to use the Internet much you can get a prepaid plan and spend about $10 a month.
You don't have to ask here; you can read all the details online. On the days you use the Internet you can use it all day for $1.
Thanks. I've looked on-line and to say it's confusing is an understatement. If I buy a T-mobile sim ($6.99 on the web), I guess I can add time by going on-line. Do I have to do anything else to get Internet access?

You should choose the prepaid plan that gives you the choice of Pay As You Go, Pay By the Day, or Sidekick. You can switch among them at will. Pay As You Go and Sidekick both allow you Internet access. I switch to Pay By the Day on days I am at home using Wireless. It costs nothing when you don't use it.
Sidekick gives you unlimited Internet access for $1 a day, but it costs $1 every day, whether you use it or not. So I only switch to Sidekick on days when I plan to use the Internet via Tmobile.
Whatever you do, once you are on this prepaid plan, the costs are low.

in particular message #72, the numbered one by me. You need to use either a proxy or Tor. Tor is easier.
All this looks intimidating, but it is cheap and interesting and can be fun.
Thanks so much for explaining the details. My N900 should arrive tomorrow and from what you say, you can have Internet access but only pay if and when you use it.
I ordered a t-mobile sim (cost $7.48 with tax and included $3.34 of connection minutes). I switched to sidekick plan. I had already installed tor (and I upgraded to the latest version of maemo). I switched the apn to hiptop.t-mobile.com and voila, Internet access over t-mobile for $1 a day. Even better - I can ssh to my home Linux box and vpn into my Linux dtv and recorder! Thanks again, geneven and others on this list.
Another weird thing - I can ssh into my home Linux computer and from there ssh into my ISP's shell server (and, for example, use pine to send e-mail). But I cannot directly ssh into the same server. I'm using tor (although the tor status web site http://torstat.xenobite.eu doesn't always recognise that I'm using tor). Regardless, this is fun!
