I finally got my configuration right. I have the Linksys WRT54G3G Wlan Router, with a mobile broadband data service. I had troubles getting the right hardware, since the Router can't handle all of todays datacards (as of yet, new firmwares are coming), but I got one, a Globetrotter Quad GT series. Not HSDPA yet, but I'm patient.

Now, I have my very personal wlan, connected with mobile broadband, the router even has a 12V power input, so it even would work in an car (if I would have one, I'm a totally pure motorbiker). With that router I have everything I need and want on my N800, no PC, no Laptop, no nothing. I finally got everything just the way I like it, minimalistic, and elegant, I believe. And am totally mobile with it.

My point is, that with the right connection the N800 can be all there's need for, even completely unhacked. I believe I can grow old with that.

Very cool... i had thought about going that route... i bet your data rates are great and others can share your connection (if you want that).

Your router claims 1 amp (12watts) so if you wanted to you could go anywhere there is cell coverage and with this :

You could power the router and charge the device. Just roll up and go cycling. Those flexible panels add about 3x the cost though but i cant see you lugging a solid panel around on a cycle.

very cool indeed. i to am a cycleist (motor and bicycle) and love simplicity. the n800 and my mobile /broad band data is all i have or need.its nice to be able to go anywhere,stay connected without luging a suitcase full of chargers laptop etc.

All in all, of course it would be so much better if the IT had a sim card slot and 3G HSDPA itself, and could log in without extra hardware. I haven't used my stuff on the road, but it's nice to keep out of all the discussions of stealing or not stealing somebodys wlan, when I've got mine with me where ever I stay for a while.

That is an awesome rig. Don't they make wi-fi routers with built-in SIM card slots yet?
Seems such a pain to have to buy the router AND then go and buy the card but I can see where it would be pretty future-proof and makes it not only GSM but CDMA compatible as well...well, until everything goes Expresscard later on.
I'd use it over here in the states for something currently ubiquitous, like slapping in an EVDO card or something.
