I have flashed my N800 successfully about ten times since I bought it in January, the last time earlier today. Why is it so much of a hassle? If formatting a disk was this much trouble, PCs would not be popular.

I have had to repeatedly do the hold-down-the-home-button, turn on the N800, then-release-the-power-button, then-when-the-USB-symbol-appears, release the-home-button trick every time I had to flash it. Today I tried both USB ports on my Dell Latitude D400 and gave up and switched to a Compaq Presario 2000 before I could get flashing to work.

I use the Nokia Windows utility. Does everyone have this much trouble?

By the way, the instructions say something like "if the USB symbol doesn't appear, do this again". My USB symbol appears EVERY TIME I TRY IT. It just doesn't "take" except about one in ten tries or so, meaning that though I do everything properly, the USB symbol disappears and the program says device not found.

I just shove the power supply plug in and don't have to worry about button presses.

Same here but found if you leave it connected, close the Nokia app then re-start the app it finds it.

Exactly. This is what I do as well. Never had a problem.

I never understand why we require access to a computer to do this. Why can't it be self contained within the device?

My Zaurus can be reflashed using the image on the SD card. This looks like a Nokia kludge.

I wonder why Nokia would invent the requirement to hold down the home key when it was not necessary? Just to make its customers think that the N800 was more difficult to use than it was?

Ignoring Nokia's explicit instructions to hold down the Home key did work for me when I tried it just now.

Texrat or someone from Nokia: why tell customers to hold down the Home key when it isn't necessary?

Plugging in the USB connection and closing the Nokia update utility and reopening it doesn't work for me. But I only tried it a couple of times.

For what it's worth, I'm using the same utility, and I've never had any trouble.

Ditto, All my updates for N770 and N800 have worked fine using the standard windows updater on XP.

This only works if you have the USB logo on the screen as in the example above, ie you have followed the instructions but its still not detected.
